Impacts of Metaverse Technology on Human Society: An Analytical Study in the Light of Islamic Thought

Abstract

Metaverse technology is a revolutionary development of the recent decade that is reshaping human social, psychological, economic, and religious life. It creates a virtual world where individuals perform their identities, interactions, and activities outside the boundaries of the physical world. This virtual realm, though separate from the material world, provides experiences that closely resemble reality. The convergence of real and virtual dimensions significantly influences human psychology, society, economy, and many behavioral trends. Prominent challenges posed to human values in the metaverse include virtual identity, time wastage, isolation, escapism, and privacy concerns. Moreover, it has the potential to transform human life into an entirely new form in the future.

The objective of this study is to analyze the social impacts of the metaverse through the lens of Islamic thought. Islam advocates a balanced social system that places great emphasis on relationships, boundaries, and moral values. This research also explores whether the metaverse can be harmonized with Islamic teachings. The study employs an analytical methodology grounded in Islamic Shariah, Islamic social principles, and contemporary sociological sciences to investigate the possible impacts of the metaverse on human society and to propose suitable solutions.
