Analytic Study of An Urdu translation of Manāhil al-ʻirfān fī ʻUlūm al-Qur’ān

Abstract

Manāhil al-ʻirfān fī ʻUlūm al-Qur’ān by Allama Abdul Azeem Zurqani written during the fourteenth-century Hijri is regraded a wonderful book in the field of Ulūm al Qur'ān. The purpose of the book is to offer Muslims a fresh perspective on the Islamic sciences established by prior scholars. Additionally, it systematically and rationally addresses the doubts posed by orientalists, while also fostering an enhanced research methodology among scholars. Notably, the author meticulously tackles objections related to the compilation of the Holy Qur'an, demonstrating a comprehensive and logical approach.

This paper is an analysis of an Urdu translation of Manāhil al-ʻirfān fī ʻUlūm al-Qur’ān published from Lahore. The objective of this Urdu translation is to acquaint Urdu readers with the scholarly endeavour of Arab scholars, enabling them to grasp the content and directly benefit from this book. Upon evaluating the translated manuscript, it becomes apparent that despite using the analytical methodology in the Urdu translation, the translator occasionally introduces omissions, insertions into original paragraphs, alterations in paragraph sequences, and modifications to headings and certain words in the original text. Nevertheless, despite these elements, the translation remains highly simple, comprehensible, and fluid. At times, the emphasis is placed on conveying the conceptual essence of expressions. A comprehensive evaluation of the book reveals that the translator has exerted considerable effort to represent the original work honestly, and this translation, from a diverse perspective, will serve as a congruent response to contemporary secular thought regarding the Quran's religious and proselytizing facets. Hence, it has been embedded in the framework of the Urdu language to facilitate the establishment of robust interlingual connections in the future between both languages.
