An Analytical Study of the Importance of Leadership and Social Values in the Islamic Concept of Morality
Abstract
Ethical values form the core of human integrity, governing our desires and impulses within divine guidelines and wisdom, thus enabling individuals to attain high moral standards. This moral elevation bestows upon a person the title of KHALEEFATULLAH or ASHRAF-UL-MAKHLOOKAT. The origins of ethical thought can be traced back to Greek Civilization, where philosophers like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle laid a rational foundation for these concepts. The political climate of the Greek Empire emphasized that a good human being was synonymous with a law-abiding citizen, integrating moral values into the fabric of politics.
In Islamic belief, Allah Almighty possesses knowledge of what is in the hearts (بِذَاتِ الصُّدُوْرِ عَلِيْمٌ), and Islam, through the Prophet's teachings, connects apparent morality with human intention (بِالنِّیات) اِنَّمَا الاعْمَالُ). The environment and leadership play critical roles in shaping an individual's morality. The golden age of Islam provided an ideal setting for the flourishing of high moral standards. Although most individuals remained true Muslims after Khilafat-e-Rashida, the piety of the Banu Ummaya and Banu Abbas Caliphs was questionable. These Caliphs were compelled to implement Islamic rites due to public demand.
Islam offers humanity a balanced path, considering worldly fluctuations. It contrasts with the Platonic philosophy of ethics and Nephrotonity, favoring progressive action over stagnation. Unique among world religions, Islam instructs its followers (اللّہ تَخَلّقُوابِاَخْلَاقِ) to emulate the attributes of their Creator. This teaching impacts both individuals and society at large, aiming to create morally upright individuals within a supportive social framework that aids in personal development.
