Challenges in Rendering Qur’anic Euphemistic Expressions into Pashto in Verses Concerning Marital Relations: An Applied Study of the Taʿlīm al-Qurʾān and Afdal al-Tarājim Translations

Abstract

This study examines the Qur’anic euphemistic expressions that denote marital and intimate relations and investigates their rhetorical, educational, and semantic dimensions. It also provides a comparative analysis of their translation in two Pashto translations of the Holy Qur’an: Ta‘lim al-Qur’an and Afdal al-Tarajim. The research adopts a descriptive, analytical, and comparative methodology. Relevant Qur’anic verses were collected and analyzed through classical exegeses, rhetorical studies, and linguistic dictionaries, followed by a comparison between the original Qur’anic expressions and their Pashto renderings. The study concludes that the Qur’an deliberately employs euphemistic language when referring to marital relations in order to preserve modesty, moral refinement, and aesthetic elegance while conveying the intended meanings effectively. The findings further reveal that both translators generally attempted to preserve the Qur’anic euphemistic style, although they differed in the extent to which they successfully conveyed the rhetorical and semantic nuances of the original text. The study highlights the necessity of integrating Qur’anic exegesis and rhetorical studies into the process of translating the Holy Qur’an.
